GEORGE EVANS has got himself in the Wrexham side and the midfielder is determined to stay there.

Phil Parkinson's men go into tomorrow's League Two clash against Crawley at The Broadfield Stadium on the back of two successive draws, with Evans named in the starting XI for both,

Having had to bide his time since arriving from Championship outfit Millwall before the transfer window closed, making four substitute appearances in the league, Evans came into the team for Saturday's 3-3 draw with Crewe Alexandra and the goalless stalemate at Mansfield in midweek.

Former England youth international Evans, who can also play at centre-back, caught the eye in both matches but with competition fierce in the squad, the 28-year-old knows he can't rest on his laurels.

"I am loving my time here and I am very grateful for the opportunity," said Evans, a product of Manchester City’s youth academy who has also played in the Championship for Reading and Derby.

"Hopefully I can get fitter with each game and put in some good performances to repay the faith the gaffer has shown in bringing me to the club.

"I need to make sure I keep the shirt because it is a good squad and there are good players who aren't playing.

"It is down to me now. I have been given the opportunity in the team and I need to make sure I am at it every game to stay there."

Mansfield dominated the first half but Parkinson's men held firm and came more into the contest after the break, having chances of their own to break the deadlock.

Although they were second best in the opening period, Evans hailed the effort from the players to ensure they didn't go behind.

"We were under pressure from the start but the lads stuck with it and our defensive display was very strong," said Evans.

"I thought the lads defended the set-pieces especially well.

"Sometimes when you are not at your best with the ball, then you have to make sure you keep the ball out of the net and we did that.

"We were under the cosh but we got bodies behind the ball and put some good blocks in.

"We kept a clean sheet so we have got to look at the positives.

"But we know we can do much better with the ball, get some control in the game and show our qualities."

Evans feels the second half performance at Field Mill gives Wrexham, ninth in the table and six points behind leaders Notts County, something to build-on at fifth-placed Crawley.

"Second half was much more like us and we created a few chances," he added.

"On another day you nick one and get three points.

"But we will take the point and move onto Saturday.

"Hopefully we put in a good performance away again and get three points.
"No game is easy but we know the qualities we have got.

"I have got full belief in this team to take it to any team so we have got to make sure we are right at it."
