LOSING took the shine off Jordan Davies scoring on his league debut for hometown club Wrexham.
Former academy graduate Davies, who hails from Coedpoeth, rejoined the Reds in the summer of 2020 after leaving Premier League side Brighton and he helped Phil Parkinson’s men clinch the National League title in 2022-23 and return to the EFL following a 15-year absence.
A substitute on the opening day against MK Dons, Davies came off the bench on the hour mark and scored a late goal but it was all in vain as Wrexham suffered a 5-3 defeat at The STóK Cae Ras.
The 24-year-old was delighted to score but it was tinged with disappointment.
“Obviously not the circumstances I would have wanted but to come on for my Football League debut and score a goal was great from a personal point of view,” said Davies.
“In the bigger picture we still lost so that takes the shine off it but it still meant a lot to me and I was happy I could make a positive impact.
“Hopefully I take that on further in the season.”
Davies went close to scoring with a powerful drive before finding the net with a superb strike from just outside the area.
“I probably should have had a hat-trick,” he said. “I had a header as well that I should have done better with.
“They are new balls this year so I have got to get used to striking them but hopefully I score more goals.”
Davies found opportunities limited last season when he returned from a serious knee injury and the midfielder is striving for a place back in the side.
“I will work my socks off to get back into the starting XI,” he said.
“Whenever I get the call off the gaffer, I will be ready and look forward to it.”
Davies could be handed a starting place when Wrexham host League One outfit Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup first round tonight.
“We don’t have to dwell all week to look to put things right,” he added.
“There is a cup game on Tuesday that we can use to bounce back.
“We had a good time in the FA Trophy going to Wembley and stuff, the Carabao Cup is a step up in quality and the lads are looking forward to it.
“It will be a good test against Wigan.”
