Phil Parkinson believes Wrexham’s return to League Two on Saturday will be a historic day for the football club.

The Reds boss, who guided the club back to the Football League after 15 years of pain, was speaking at the EFL season launch at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

Wrexham get their campaign underway at home to MK Dons, with a bumper crowd expected once again.

The Reds faithful proved a key factor in the club’s success last term, winning 22 out of 23 home games.

Parkinson has issued a rallying cry to Wrexham fans ahead of the League Two return.

He said: "It's an incredible day in the history of Wrexham football club, 15 years outside of the division, it really is a special moment for us all to bring league football back to the football club and the town, we're very excited about it.

"It's a team effort like I've said, and I mean that,” the Reds boss added.

"Every person who has a ticket, who's inside the ground from minute one has got to play their role in helping the team win games of football.

"We've got to make this as difficult a place for the opposition to play as possible, that's in the manner we play and the support, the intensity of the ground. It's been fantastic to be a part of that over the last couple of years and we aim to get the team playing in a way that will really lift our supporters for every minute of every game.

"Of course the supporters here have played a key part and they deserved that success last season and the next chapter is about to start on Saturday.”

While Parkinson admitted that he would’ve liked more minutes ahead of the new season, there can be no excuses for the bookies' favourites for the title.

He said: "Ideally we'd have liked more minutes and the last game kind of affected that, but certain things are out of your control.

"I feel taking everything into consideration, the lads were in good shape in training yesterday and it was a key day for us, looking at how the lads had recovered from the journey.

"This week is about getting all of that out of our systems and being refreshed and ready to go at the weekend.

"The favourites tag, I don't mind it, it doesn't really bother me at all and the fact we got 111 points you can see why the bookies have arrived at that, so yeah no problem, we will deal with that."
