WREXHAM AFC's long-awaited return to the English Football League takes place this Saturday (August 5).

Little did most fans think, on that fateful day the club was relegated in 2008, that it would take this long to climb back into the 'big time'.

But, fast forward 15 years and there is renewed hope at the Racecourse that is, arguably, like nothing ever seen before.

The takeover of the club by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2021 sparked new life into the Reds.

And the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary which followed a year or so later took the club to unprecedented levels of recognition worldwide.

As such, you will no doubt hear an American accent or two (and various other accents too!) in the stands alongside those faithful long-standing local voices this season.

Record crowds are now a regular occurrence at the Racecourse and the likes of star striker Paul Mullin have gained celebrity status during a whirlwind journey to date under the owners.

And Phil Parkinson's Wrexham side itself will be looking to build on what they achieved last season - an incredible 111 points taking them to the National League title as record-breakers.

They out-muscled Notts County to that trophy and many are tipping them to go all the way again in League Two despite being up against even sterner sides.

MK Dons will be the first hurdle standing in the way of any long-term glory when they visit the Racecourse on Saturday.

The excitement, nerves and anticipation around the fixture could not be greater.

But, whatever happens that afternoon, the town/city will stand proud knowing that their club has bounced back from the pits of despair to what is now looking like an incredibly bright future ahead.
