MARC WILLIAMS believes momentum is huge and only a little tinkering with Wrexham’s record-breaking squad is needed for Phil Parkinson to lead his side to more success.

Parkinson’s side clinched the National League title last season with a best-ever 111 points haul, returning to the Football League following a 15-year absence.

Only two players who featured in 2022-23 - Reece Hall-Johnson and Harry Lennon - have departed The Racecourse with defender Will Boyle the only arrival so far.

Former Reds’ striker Williams, who was in the Wrexham team the season they last played in League Two, believes confidence will be high in the ranks and he can see Wrexham following the example of other clubs who got out of non-league and were in the promotion mix again next season.

“When I watched Wrexham last season, and you think of them competing against Sheffield United, they have got some really talented players,” said Williams, who featured in the Football League for Wrexham and scored 21 goals in 100 first team appearances before leaving in 2011.

“When you have got someone like Paul Mullin who can literally make something out of nothing, those two goals against Boreham Wood were fantastic.

“It is not just him, they have got really good players and it wouldn’t shock me if Wrexham went up again.

“Obviously it is not as easy as that but you do find that teams who get out of the National League go on and do really well the next season.

“I would tip them to be up there because I think they are good enough and strong enough.

“Although I’m sure there will be a couple of additions, the year they have had together and all that camaraderie they’ve got and what they’ve been through together, they are almost heroes now and I think they will keep building, especially with the fanbase they have got and the backing.”

Williams never believed Wrexham would be in the non-league doldrums for a decade-and-a-half.

“I didn’t think it would be this long out of the Football League,” added Williams, who has played for the likes of Chester, Kidderminster and a number of Welsh clubs since leaving Wrexham, where he came through the youth ranks.

“My last appearance was against Luton and this year they have gone up to the Premier League so it shows what can be done over time.”
