IT seems it's not always sunny in Philadelphia!

Wrexham brought the curtain down on their hugely successful American tour with a 1-1 draw versus Philadelphia Union II at Subaru Park.

Tom O’Connor fired the Reds into a 42nd minute lead, but there was still time for Jeremy Rafanello to level things up prior to the break.

The main talking point turned out to be the extreme weather, though.

After the friendly started in extreme heat and humidity, the match ended up being delayed for more than two hours at the interval when thunderstorm rolled in.

Supporters were urged to take shelter from the elements away from the open seating areas.

With Paul Mullin recovering in San Diego after the punctured lung he suffered against Manchester United, Reds' boss Phil Parkinson played Sam Dalby up front, with Elliot Lee sat off him.

James Jones, Jacob Mendy, Eoghan O’Connell and Will Boyle also came into the starting XI and Wrexham went close after two minutes.

Lee’s centre was deflected into the path of Ben Tozer, but his low shot hit Boyle and was deflected wide.

Ben Foster had to make a fine double save at the other end to deny Rafanello and Quinn Sullivan, while midway through the half, O’Connell managed to flick on Tozer’s long throw, with Dalby’s subsequent header being comfortably saved.

It was a similar story three minutes later when O'Connor's corner was met by the head of Lee, with the attempt going straight at Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andrew Rick.

Wrexham did manage to get the ball into the net with six minutes of the first half remaining.

O’Connell flicked on another Tozer throw-in and Dalby was there to head in, but the referee spotted an infringement.

The Reds did open their account three minutes later.

Lee's corner was deflected to an unmarked O’Connor and he rifled his effort into the net.

That wasn't the end of the first half drama, though, and in stoppage time, Tozer fouled Rafanello on the edge of the box following O'Connell's loose pass.

Rafanello picked himself up to take the free kick himself and the set piece took a deflection off Andy Cannon to wrongfoot Foster.

That was that for the next couple of hours as the thunderstorm came in.

Not for the first time this summer, Parkinson changed the entire line-up at the break, which included a first appearance on the US Tour for Aaron James in defence, while first team coach David Jones took a spot in the centre of the park.

Rafanello’s fierce shot from 20 yards was well saved by replacement keeper Mark Howard at the beginning of the second half.

Howard was in the thick of the action again soon afterwards, turning Vazquez’s low shot away from goal.

Wrexham looked to reclaim the lead on the hour as a long-range effort from Jordan Davies was saved and Philadelphia Union sub Nelson Pierre hit the post 10 minutes from time.

Kyle Tucker fired straight at Howard in a further home chance, while Aaron James' header went narrowly wide at the other end in stoppage time.
