WREXHAM have only been back in pre-season training for a couple of days but Phil Parkinson likes what he’s seen so far.

The players had two days of testing after returning from the summer break on Thursday.

With programmes to follow over the last two months, Parkinson knew his players would be in good, physical shape and that has proved to be the case.

And after clinching the National League title following a record-breaking 2022-23 campaign, the Reds’ boss can sense his players are relishing the new League Two season which kicks off with a home game against MK Dons on Saturday August 5.

“I am pleased with the start of pre-season,” said Parkinson.

“The lads have come back in good shape which we expected.

“The break was quite a long one because we went up automatically but they have all been doing off-season programmes and also had spells in where they have been working with our sports science team.

“It is all about getting that balance right where everyone has the opportunity to mentally prepare themselves for the season but also making sure that physically, everybody is ready for the start of pre-season.

“The early signs are that there is a real feel of freshness about everybody coming back and excitement as well.

“There was a good feel about the group when they came back in last week and we are looking forward to progressing that this week on the training pitch.

“We have got five weeks now to build up towards the start of the season.”

Wrexham will prepare for a first campaign in the Football League since 2008 by embarking on a four-game tour of America.

Parkinson’s men will have a couple of low-key matches before the trip to the States.

“We are going to have an in-house game this week and then we have got a game behind closed doors against Bala Town,” added Parkinson.
