ELLIOT LEE’S reaction said it all and the playmaker admits scoring the winning goal against title rivals Notts County was the best feeling he’s had in a Wrexham shirt.
Brought in last summer from Luton Town, Lee has played his part in the Reds’ automatic promotion challenge and his 78th minute strike earned a 3-2 victory over the Magpies at The Racecourse on Monday.
It was obvious from his celebration that the goal - his 14th of the season - meant a lot to Lee and the playmaker was delighted to bounce back from the 3-1 defeat at Halifax Town last Friday which ended the 28-game unbeaten league run by picking up a huge victory in the battle to finish top.
“I have had some great feelings since I joined this club and that tops them all,” said the 28-year-old, who netted for the fourth successive match.
“It means so much to me and I know how much it means to the lads and how much it means to the fans to get this club over the line.
“We know it was a big day, especially after Friday when we were so disappointed with our performance.
“We really wanted to react to it and we did that.
“I thought we deserved the win in the end.”
Wrexham trailed at half-time but turned things around to lead 2-1 thanks to top scorer Paul Mullin’s 44th goal of the campaign and Jacon Mendy’s strike.
Although County levelled, Lee put the Reds back ahead and goalkeeper Ben Foster saved Cedwyn Scott’s stoppage time penalty to secure victory which leaves Wrexham three points ahead of the Magpies with a game in hand.
There are four matches remaining, with Barnet next up at The Hive on Saturday, and while it was an important win in the title race Lee won’t get carried away with County still in contention.
“It was a great game,” said Lee.
“I am sure it was great for all the fans in the stadium and everyone watching at home.
“It’s a great day for the club and a great win for the lads and the fans, I’m sure they’ll enjoy it.
“We are absolutely buzzing and it’s a big step in the right direction but we know nothing’s won yet.
“There’s four big ones to go.
“We enjoyed the win but we haven’t achieved what we set out to.
“We we will be ready go again at Barnet and the three after that as well.”
Lee accepts Wrexham produced a poor performance when they allowed Halifax to come from behind to win at The Shay.
It was only a third defeat of a remarkable season and the midfielder was delighted with the response against County.
“We know we weren’t good enough and that’s what happens if we drop our levels,” Lee added.
“We’ve been on an incredible run and there was no-one more disappointed than us in the changing room, but it happens.
“There’s so many ups and downs in football, and it’s not easy winning league titles.
“There’s going to be blips along the way and that was one; it’s about how you react to it and we reacted incredibly.”
