PAUL MULLIN would love to hit the 50-goal mark but the striker won’t mind if he doesn’t find the back of the net again this season as long as Wrexham clinch promotion.

The Reds’ top scorer bagged a hat-trick in Saturday’s brilliant 5-1 victory against Oldham Athletic at The Racecourse, taking his tally for the campaign to 43 goals in all competitions.

Victory saw Wrexham return to the top of the National League and they hold a three point lead over Notts County with a game in hand.

Phil Parkinson’s men have six matches remaining in the title race and wins come before personal accolades for Mullin who in 2021-22 finished as Wrexham’s leading scorer with 32 goals to scoop the Player of the Season award as well as the National League’s golden boot and Player of the Season gong.

“It is a great season personally,” said Mullin.

“As I have said many times, I genuinely don’t care about goals.

“There is only one goal in my mind and that is to try and get us promoted.

“If it meant I don’t score another goal, I couldn’t care less as long as it was a successful season.”

But Mullin hopes to continue his red-hot scoring streak in the quest for automatic promotion.

“Hopefully it is 50 because it means I have scored a lot more goals,” he said.

“That is the plan, to try and get as many as I can.

“But it is just about winning games and we will focus on that.”

Mullin admits he could have finished with more than a treble, with an early goal strangely ruled off for a foul on Oldham goalkeeper Matthew Hudson who appeared to have been challenged by a Latics team-mate.

Eoghan O’Connell then put Wrexham ahead with a header after Mullin’s free-kick rebounded off the crossbar to him.

“I got a hat-trick but it could have been more,” he said.

“When it bounced off the crossbar you are gutted but Eoghan managed to finish it with a great header because it came back really quickly at him.

“That set us on our way.

“I don’t know why he disallowed the goal, their man has jumped into the goalkeeper, he dropped it to the floor and I hit it in but that’s football.

“But we did really well, creating a lot of chances and scoring lots of goals.”

Wrexham were on top throughout, producing their best performance of the season, and Mullin says it was a team effort.

“I thought we were fantastic,” said Mullin.

“We put a lot of hard work in the week on how we wanted to play and we did it superbly.

“We moved the ball well, we created a lot of chances and it should have been more but at this stage of the season you take the win.

“The whole team was magnificent.

“Without the lads, I don’t get any chances.

“It is up to them to create them, thankfully they have managed to do in bucket loads.”
