ANDY MORRELL believes Notts County have brought the best out in Wrexham who are on course to break a club record for most points in a season.
Morrell was in the Racecourse hotseat when the Reds were pipped to the National League title by big-spending Fleetwood Town in the 2011-12 campaign despite finishing with a best-ever 98 points haul.
Phil Parkinson’s leaders are set to pass that tally after taking an incredible 91 points from 37 matches.
Wrexham have nine matches left but the race for the title isn’t over because County are also in contention for automatic promotion.
The Magpies came from behind to beat Eastleigh 3-1 on Tuesday and are now one point behind the Reds who have a game in hand.
Unbeaten in 25 league outings, Wrexham’s destiny is in their own hands and Racecourse legend Morrell is backing his former club to finish the job off.
“We can only worry about ourselves, we can’t worry what they are doing,” said the former Reds player and manager.
“But I think the number of points Wrexham have got is because of Notts County.
“Wrexham have had to keep winning to be able to stay right in there so both of them have pushed each other to this ridiculous amount of points that they’ve both got, and could get.
“Wrexham have already surpassed the amount of goals they scored last year, they have already got more points than last year, and with nine games to go that is ridiculous.
“I can’t see anything other than Wrexham getting out of this league this year.”
Wrexham ground out a 1-0 victory at home to Southend and Morrell says winning is all that matters at this stage of the season.
“It is just about wins now,” he added. “Wrexham just got over the line, although they did have the better chances and Southend didn’t create a great deal.
“You have got to find a way to win and they did that.
“It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t the free-flowing football that you are used to here, the goals and the mauling’s they have given out to some teams, but they dug in and got through it; that is all that matters.”
