RHYS HUGHES is playing his part as Chester target promotion from National League North.
On loan from League Two Tranmere Rovers until the end of this month, Hughes is enjoying his time at the Deva Stadium - and he’s been a fan of the Blues bagging late goals!
On a number of occasions this season, Calum McIntyre’s charges have struck late to claim victories or salvage points.
“I think before I signed on loan, they were scoring quite a few late on,” said Wrexham-born Hughes. “Since I have been here, it’s been two-or-three goals in 90-plus minutes.
“We scored the winner last week in the 95th minute.”
Hughes , who grabbed the opener on Saturday as third-placed Chester defeated Banbury 4-2, added: “The loan has been extended for another month.
“It’s good I’m there for another month and hopefully I keep playing.”
Hughes has a good grounding in the sport, having spent a decade-and-a-half with Everton.
“I was there from five until I was 20,” said Hughes, who also played for the Welsh age sides all the way up to U21s.
“That was another good experience. You say you never know in football and you’ve just got to try and play well.
“Football is a crazy game!”
Hughes has been impressed by his colleagues since making the loan switch to Chester.
“Everyone’s going to play their part,” he added. “We have got a good squad and everyone can come in.”
Among the highlights so far is Hughes’ winner at league leaders King’s Lynn Town in a 1-0 triumph.
“It was a really good win to be fair,” he said. “We needed that win. I think we hadn’t won in three since I had been there.
“I was really hoping to get a win and we did it at King’s Lynn, who hadn’t lost at home.”
Hughes also thinks it has been a crucial move as far as his footballing development is concerned.
“Every standard is different.
“At League Two, it is different. It’s what I needed. It was to learn the men’s game and the other side of the game.”
As for targets while at the Deva Stadium, Hughes is aiming high.
“As a group, we believe we can get into the automatic promotion place,” he said. “But we are not looking too far ahead and we are just looking at the next game.
“At the end of the season, we’ll see where we are and we will take that when we get there. We’re not looking too far ahead.”
