THE result was all that matters to Phil Parkinson after his side ground out a 2-0 win at home to Scunthorpe United.
Wrexham were far from their best and produced a lacklustre performance against the second bottom Iron at The Racecourse.
But top scorer Paul Mullin won and converted penalties in each half to take his tally for the season to 35 goals and secure victory which keeps the second placed Reds five points behind Notts County, who saw off Southend 4-0, with two games in hand.
With 14 matches left in the race for the National League title, Parkinson was just happy with another three-point haul.
“I am pleased with the win,” said Parkinson.
“It wasn’t our most fluent home performance by any stretch of the imagination.
“We got the goal, I thought we'd done alright to that point and then we kind of took a back step as a team; we gave Scunthorpe a bit of belief.
“Second half, we did better but it was a night for the solid players.
“Jordan Tunnicliffe at the back, Ben Tozer and Rob Lainton, solid citizens to stand up and make sure we got the result.
“We had to dig deep as a team. At times the quality level wasn’t where we’d like it to be but it is just about keeping those wins coming and we have done that.”
Lowly Scunthorpe, with new manager Jimmy Dean at the helm, put in a spirited display and were eventually sunk by Mullin’s penalty double which extended Wrexham’s unbeaten league run to 20 games.
“Scunthorpe were a team who have been lifted by about six or seven new signings,”said Parkinson.
“A new manager has come in and they had a great win against Dagenham at the weekend.
“They worked really hard for him and they gave us a tough game but we just had to stand strong as a team.
“We restricted them to a few moments but not loads and it was great to get the win.”
Goalkeeper Rob Lainton made his first league appearance of the season in place of Mark Howard and helped Wrexham keep a first clean sheet in seven games.
“Rob came in and I thought he did well,” added Parkinson.
“Clean sheets are important for the defenders and it was a night for the solid players who stood strong for the team.”
