EOGHAN O'CONNELL will be cheering his team-mates on tonight against Sheffield United hoping his FA Cup adventure with Wrexham isn't over before it's even began.
The centre-back joined from Charlton Athletic last Tuesday for an undisclosed fee and enjoyed a dream debut, scoring a late winner as Phil Parkinson's side beat Altrincham 2-1 on Saturday.
The title challenge is put on hold when Wrexham face Championship high-fliers United in the FA Cup fourth round replay at Bramall Lane but O'Connell will have a watching brief.
O'Connell did not play for Charlton in this season's competition as he was out injured but the 27-year-old is illegible to play in the replay because he was not registered with Wrexham before the first meeting between the sides which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw at The Racecourse last Sunday.
Although he would love to face the Blades, O'Connell is looking forward to building his fitness levels having only recently returned to action.
"I am disappointed I can't play but in a way it might help me because I have not played a lot of football recently," said the Irish defender.
"I can use this week to get myself back up to full fitness and be ready again on Saturday if the gaffer needs me.
"I am looking forward to supporting the lads at Sheffield United but looking forward to putting some work in as well to get back up to speed."
The winners will be home to Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round on Wednesday March 1 and O'Connell, who appeared as a substitute when Charlton lost 3-0 against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the League Cup last month, has not given up on facing another Premier League side.
"That would be nice," said O'Connell.
"I have had a day out at Old Trafford already this year so Spurs would be nice.
"What the boys are doing here, I don't think the club needs much more of a lift but it can definitely springboard you in the league and you take it from there.
"I'm sure it will be a great night for the club on Tuesday and I am looking forward to watching the lads give it a good go."
