PAUL MULLIN described his partnership with Ollie Palmer as a “match made in heaven”.

The deadly duo didn’t find the back of the net at Boreham Wood on Saturday but they were a handful during an excellent second half performance as Wrexham came from behind to draw 1-1 and stay second in the National League heading into tonight’s home game against Halifax Town.

Mullin and Palmer have bagged 56 goals between them since the latter joined the Reds from AFC Wimbledon for a club record transfer fee in January.

Mullin bagged 19 goals following the arrival of Palmer, who struck 16 times as Wrexham reached the FA Trophy final and finished runners-up to National League champions Stockport County.

The pair have picked up where they left off in 2022-23 with leading marksman Mullin scoring 12 goals and Palmer firing in nine.

Speaking about the potent partnership, Mullin, who joined Wrexham from Cambridge United in the summer of 2021 and was the Reds’ leading scorer with 32 strikes last season, said: “At the start of last season there was a lot of emphasis on myself to get the goals.

“It sort of worked out that way that I had to score, I was reliant to score the goals.

“Ollie came in and he has been brilliant for me and brilliant for himself.

“We are always a threat in the box, occupy defenders and work really hard.

“Ollie’s a joy to play with. We link up and bring each other into play, and are always looking for each other.

“We are mates off the pitch as well as on the pitch and I think that goes a long way.

“We work hard every day in training to link up and try and get better - we can only get better from here.”

Palmer enjoyed a dream debut as he scored the only goal in the 1-0 win against Grimsby on January 25 but Mullin was sent off in the next game as Wrexham drew 1-1 with Maidenhead and he served a four-game suspension because it was his second red card of 2021-22.

But the duo have linked up brilliantly since Mullin’s return.

“Ollie came in without any training, I started two games with him and then got sent off so I missed another four,” added Mullin.

“But once I was back after suspension we hit the ground running and it was like a match made in heaven.

“Hopefully we can carry it on.”

Palmer is also pleased with the duo’s goal-scoring record and the frontman feels he and Mullin have struck up the perfect partnership.

“That’s not bad going at all in less than 12 months of football,” said Palmer.

“It is always nice hearing those stats but that is what we are there to do, score goals.

“I think everyone sees how well we work together and we create opportunities for each other.

“Since I have come here I have had a fantastic relationship with Mulls and that shows on the pitch.”
