JAMES JONES says all the players are thriving on the competition for places in the Wrexham squad.

Reds’ boss Phil Parkinson has even more options at his disposal for the club’s 15th campaign in non-league after completing six new signings over the summer.

There is strength in depth all over the pitch, and Jones is not of competition in his midfield position with captain Luke Young, Jordan Davies, Elliot Lee, Tom O’Connor and Liam McAlinden among the players vying for a starting place.

Jones, Young and Davies got the nod for the fifth game running as Wrexham beat Dagenham and Redbridge 4-1 on Tuesday but the 26-year-old knows he can’t rest on his laurels and feels the fight for a spot in the team will bring out the best in him and his team-mates.

“That is football,” said Jones.

“It is a good problem for the gaffer to have and it is a good problem for the team to have.

“You are going to have to fight for your place and if you are not doing it, there are plenty of good options waiting for a place.

“It is going to be a long season and you are going to need everyone.

“We have got such great strength in depth across the board - midfield, everywhere.

“When you look at the quality of signings we have made, the competition is high but that can only bring the best out in you.

“You know you have got to be at it otherwise you are not going to play.

“It is a good problem to have and hopefully it drives us on this season.”

Lee again appeared as a late substitute alongside striker Sam Dalby against Dagenham as Wrexham registered a fifth successive win.

The duo have made the majority of their appearances off the bench since arriving at The Racecourse in the summer but Parkinson praised the attitude of all the players out of the side.

“I feel for those two because they haven’t had as much game time as they would have liked,” said Parkinson.

“But we need a good squad, we need cover in all areas and like I always say, the attitude of the players not in the team is so important for the group who are playing.

“In this 10 day period, every single member of the squad has trained really well and that reflected in the way we played against Dagenham."
