MAX CLEWORTH prefers to focus on the future rather than reflect on the past following an impressive start to the season.
The centre-back enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough campaign in 2021-22 which earned him the Young Player of the Season award.
A regular in the side from the end of January as he made a total of 29 league appearances, many might have thought that Cleworth’s place was in jeopardy heading into Wrexham’s 15th season in non-league after manager Phil Parkinson brought in Jordan Tunnicliffe from Crawley Town,.
However Cleworth, a product of the club’s youth academy, has started all seven games and has been one of Wrexham’s stand-out players but the 20-year-old won’t rest on his laurels.
“Last season doesn’t count for much now,” said Cleworth. “I have just got to keep working hard.
“Jordan has been a big help since he has come in and he is really pushing everyone, he’s a very good player.
“Everyone is keeping each other on their toes and whoever gets picked, I’m sure will do a good job.
“Hopefully as a team and a squad we can just keep building and keep pushing forward.”
Cleworth again caught the eye as Wrexham thrashed Dorking 5-0 on Saturday to make it four wins in a row, with the Reds scoring16 goals in the process, to stay second in the National League.
That was the second clean sheet of the season and the young defender wants more.
“From a personal point of view I’m pleased,” Cleworth said about his start to the season.
“This was our second clean sheet, a couple more would be nice.
“I just try to enjoy my football and play as well as I can each game, and see what happens from there.”
