WREXHAM were ruthless in front of goal against Dorking Wanderers but Phil Parkinson was just as pleased with how his side played out of possession.
The Reds triumphed 5-0 in the first ever meeting between the sides at Meadowbank Stadium to extend the winning run to four games and stay second in the National League behind early leaders Chesterfield.
Parkinson’s men have found their shooting boots during the quartet of victories, scoring 16 times, but the Wrexham boss praised his players for the way they performed when newly promoted Dorking had the ball.
“I thought it was a really good, solid performance first and foremost without the ball,” said Parkinson.
“Everyone did their jobs out of possession.
“On Tuesday we won, we had periods we weren’t happy with and we looked at that with the lads; when Gateshead went down to 10 men, we became too open out of possession, they had a bit of possession and it created a bit of edginess when we had the ball.
“Today, the minute we lost it everybody did their job for the team because we know when we win the ball back, we have got good players.
“I thought there was a real tightness about us when we didn’t have the ball and I enjoy watching that as much as scoring the goals.”
Wrexham built up a 3-0 lead at the break with Ollie Palmer, Jacob Mendy and an own-goal leaving the Reds in control.
Palmer, who was initially claiming the third goal which was adjudged to have been put through his own net by Dorking midfielder Luke Moore, made it 4-0 early in the second half before substitute Elliot Lee completed the scoring.
After taking his tally to four goals in three games, Palmer is bang in form but Parkinson liked what he saw from the striker when Wrexham weren’t in possession.
“Ollie was great, a superb cross from Jacob and a fantastic first goal,” said Parkinson.
“But I was happier with his recovery positions out of possession; he got himself back in his position which is important and when you come up against the better teams, that is even more important.
“Football is always the same, do your job out of possession and on the ball, and it rolls into play for us like it did for us today.”
Delighted with the overall performance from his side, Parkinson added: "The work off the ball was good and the respect we showed Dorking, we didn't make it a loose kind of game.
"When they had the ball we were tight and some of the quality in the final third was different class.
"The Elliot Lee goal was a fantastic bit of play and some of the inter-play which didn't lead to goals was equally as good.
"We looked dangerous and that is always good to see."
