CURTIS WOODHOUSE was the talk of the touchline after the former Sheffield United footballer-turned-boxer was spotted at Cefn Druids’ game with Bala Town on Saturday.
Woodhouse had tweeted before the game: “I’m on my way to Wales this morning. Always fancied a crack at Europe.”
Druids are managerless after last week’s departure of Portuguese boss Bruno Lopes but The New Saints, who host rock-bottom Cefn tomorrow night, are also after a new coach.
TNS parted company with Scott Ruscoe and it didn’t get any better on Saturday for the Park Hall club, who lost 2-1 at Haverfordwest County.
It’s also been a miserable return to action at The Rock where Druids have slumped to the bottom with Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Colin Caton’s Bala their 13th loss in 19 league games.
Druids, who also parted company with Dave ‘Pixie’ Taylor in the build-up to the game, got off to a flyer with Joe Faux setting up former Bala player Stefan Edwards for the opening goal with just six minutes on the clock
Colin Caton had seen enough after 20 minutes, throwing on experienced midfielder Steven Leslie and they were soon level.
Chris Venables’ volley was palmed away by Michael Jones but Ollie Shannon was on hand to fire in the equaliser.
Venables had a header cleared off the line before the break but again he played a part in Bala’s second goal as Shannon doubled his and Bala’s tally.
The game was put beyond doubt on 67 minutes when Raul Correia was fouled in the box and Venables tucked away from the spot.
Druids were unlucky not to get a penalty of their own before Leslie was red carded after clashing with Ryan Kershaw.
Level on points and stuck in the bottom two alongside Druids are Flint Town United, who were beaten 2-0 at home by Caernarfon Town.
Caernarfon, who are managed by former Druids boss Huw Griffiths, were described as more ‘savvy’ by Silkmen boss Neil Gibson.
Gibson’s side has slumped to three defeats in a week and they haven’t scored a goal in those three games.
“We’re disappointed but we didn’t deserve to lose the game 2-0,” said Gibson.
“I’d say that they were more savvy in the game. They were better defending in their own box and more clinical in the other.”
Flint keeper Jon Rushton was in the action early on to deny Jake Bickerstaff and Sion Bradley although the hosts weren’t helped by an injury to striker Jordan Buckley, who limped off after only nine minutes.
Buckley (pictured right) was replaced by Conor Harwood, who came closest to breaking the deadlock but his effort went the wrong side of the post.
It was Paulo Mendes who did get the first goal as he got the final touch after a 63rd minute corner.
And it was game over three minutes later as Sion Bradley was allowed too much time in the box to comfortably beat Rushton.
