MARCH 3 1962 was a record-breaking day for Wrexham Football Club.
Fans love seeing the players they idolise score hat-tricks and the Reds fans had not one, not two but three to cheer on as they hammered Hartlepool United 10-1 at The Racecourse - the club’s biggest win ever.
The Reds, with Ken Barnes their player-manager, went into the game having not won since Boxing Day.
Welsh legend Wyn Davies, who went on to play for Manchester City and Manchester United, started it all off and went on to complete his hat-trick.
Also challenging him for grabbing the match ball in front of a 6,400 were Ron Barnes and Roy Ambler.
Stan Bennion was the Reds other scorer while Wrexham-born Tecwyn Jones, pictured with Wyn Davies at a former Reds players’ golf day, also set up two of the 10 goals.
Wrexham’s remarkable record against Hartlepool rolled on 43 years later when Juan Ugarte fired in five goals in a 6-4 victory in the north east on March 5 2005. But the memorable days on March 3 kept on coming - Wrexham’s European Cup Winners’ Cup 1-0 quarter-final defeat in Anderlecht in 1976.
John Neal’s Reds had beaten Djurgardens and Stal Rzeszow before taking on the Belgian giants.
Stuart Lee, pictured right in action during the first leg, missed some great chances to score a vital away goal although the ex-Bolton striker did grab Wrexham’s goal in the 1-1 draw at The Racecourse.
The big win 59 years ago was one of only six in 24 games on March 3.
MARCH 3 RECORD: P 24; W 6; D 9; L 9
