THEO VASSELL insists Wrexham have plenty to work on if they are to challenge for promotion.
But the defender believes the Reds can be proud of their 3-2 victory at Weymouth, who were two goals to the good with just 18 minutes remaining of their National League clash.
As things stand, Wrexham have just one game - at Stockport on December 28 - between Saturday’s FA Trophy tie with Leamington and the home clash with Woking on January 9, allowing Dean Keates Reds to iron out any issues.
“The performance wasn’t great at all from the very start,” said Vassell, who is claiming two goals in the victory, despite Adi Yussuf’s protestations over the Wrexham opener.
“I thought we were sloppy, we were 2-0 down at half-time and we knew we were in a game.
“We had 45 minutes to put things right, we had nothing to lose, we had to get something out of the game and we came out on top, most importantly.
“There’s a lot we need to work on, the performance wasn’t good enough.
“We’ve got a game on Saturday, but then we’ve got a bit of time to get on the training pitch and work on things.
“Three points is what we came for and that’s what we got, so we will take it and we can be proud of that.”
While there are question marks over Vassell’s first, there was nothing dubious about the second as the defender powered through a couple of challenges before firing home.
“You need that bit of luck and I got that. I got tackled, got it back and finished. I looked up and my eyes lit up,” said Vassell, who joked that he will be passing on tips to the Wrexham attackers, adding: “I will be having words, don’t worry about that!”
At the other end, Wrexham struggled to adapt early on to a shift to three centre-backs with Shaun Pearson and Fiacre Kelleher joining Vassell in the heart of defence.
On the switch, Vassell said: “I’ve played in a three before - that’s what I’m more used to - so I don’t mind it. Obviously whatever formation the gaffer picks, we will respect that.”
