NIALL MCGUINNESS insists that Flint Town United ‘won’t take their foot off the gas’ after a promising start to life in the top-flight.
The Silkmen bounced back from a 3-1 defeat to Aberystwyth Town by beating Cefn Druids 2-1 on Wednesday night, making it two wins from three matches this season to rise to second place in the table.
Boss McGuinness, who saw his side start the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Newtown, isn’t about to get carried away by six points from a possible nine since promotion from the Cymru North.
“You want to get points on the board, whatever the level you play at,” said McGuinness. “It’s important to get off to a good start, especially in the Cymru Premier given the level of intensity, and we are delighted with how we’ve done so far.
“But it’s only three games into the season and it’s about being on our toes every single game and working hard for each other.
“It’s important that we don’t take our foot off the gas and try to keep picking up positive results.”
Next-up for Flint is a televised home encounter against Gavin Chesterfield’s Barry Town United on Saturday evening.
It promises to be an interesting night for the club, McGuinness saying: “It’s my first encounter playing against Barry Town United as a manager.
“And it’s hopefully third time lucky for the club in terms of a televised game, so it should be a good day for the football club.
“We want to keep the momentum going from the victory over Druids and keep trying to make our home ground a fortress.
“We started the season with a 1-0 home win over Newtown and that’s a result we want to build on.”
Mark Cadwallader is pushing for a recall to Flint’s starting XI for the clash with Barry after he stepped off the bench to fire what proved to be the winner against Druids in midweek.
Speaking about the decision to exclude last season’s top scorer from his starting XI, McGuinness explained: “It was a chance to freshen us up because I felt a change was needed.
“Caddy was hungry to prove his point when he came on and he took one of the hardest chances he’s had this season, so it worked.”
Cadwallader was played in by Wes Baynes, the former Wrexham and Chester man having also created the opener for captain Richie Foulkes.
“We knew the quality Wes possessed and his two assists showed that,” said McGuinness.
“His technique is one of the best I’ve seen.”
Rob Hughes sits out the third and final game of his suspension, while Flint are waiting on international clearance for attacker Ben Steer.
Barry Town United could include new signing Josh Gould in their squad for the trip to Flintshire after the goalkeeper signing on-loan from Swansea City.
Talking to Barry’s official website, Gould can’t wait to get going under Chesterfield.
“It’s run really well and always been an attractive option, with it not being too far from Swansea either. Playing in the Cymru Premier and under Gavin really excites me. I’ve heard a lot about him and his thoughts and ideas.
“I believe our philosophies of how we want to play the game link up so I’m really looking forward to playing under him. He sounds like a great guy and the environment he’s created here is great.”
