BRYAN HUGHES insists age is no barrier and will not hesitate giving Matty Sargent and Jack Thorn their chance in the Wrexham first team if they prove they deserve an opportunity.
Sargent and Thorn were both offered their first professional contracts by Hughes after completing their scholarships at The Racecourse with the midfield duo putting pen to paper on one year deals.
Hughes showed last term he is not afraid to turn to the pair, with Sargent handed his senior debut as a late substitute in December's 3-0 FA Trophy first round win against Boston United, before making a first league appearance when he started Wrexham's 2-1 victory over Harrogate Town on the final day of the regular season.
Thorn came off the substitutes bench for his first team debut in the same game.
The pair did not travel to Portugal for the club's pre-season training camp with Hughes limited on the amount of players he could take.
But the Reds boss, who came through the youth ranks at The Racecourse in the 1990s, is hoping the young duo realise their potential.
"I have shown my cards with them already and given them their debuts," said Hughes.
"Matty started against Harrogate where he excelled.
"I have come through the system at the club, I started my first game when I was 17 and I am a big believer that if you are good enough, you are old enough; your age is just a number.
"These two have got potential to go on and if they progress like I am hopeful they will, they are going to have good futures at the club."
With just three weeks until Wrexham kick off a 12th season in non-league, Hughes is looking to put the finishing touches to his squad but he is pleased with it's make-up so far.
"I am very happy with my squad at the moment," said Hughes.
"I have recruited well, I am just looking at position-specific stuff now.
"I am very content with what I have got so far.
"There might be a little bit of movement depending on what goes on over the next few weeks but we will just have to wait and see."
