A FLINTSHIRE Lord has paid tribute to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Lord Barry Jones, who was one of the Queen's Privy Counsellors, described the nation’s longest reigning monarch as an "iconic figure" who was "forever amidst us."

He said: "Queen Elizabeth II was a magnificent monarch.

"We can say that Queen Elizabeth II was a formal sovereign, alongside British greats like the first Elizabeth.

"[She was] one of the greatest ever.

"Our Queen was an iconic figure amidst Britons, especially in Wales - always dutiful, Queen Elizabeth was forever amidst us.

"For example, when at the opening of Theatr Clwyd in the 70s, she brought much grace and charm to us all.

"Years later at the opening of the Dee Bridge in the new century, the Queen was very thoughtful and very dignified.

"This great Queen entered British hearts and stayed there.

"And now, today, God Save the King."

Queen Elizabeth II personally appointed Lady Janet Jones as the accepted County of Clwyd High Sheriff.
