Romance was in the air at Queensferry CP School, in Deeside, for a special occasion recently.

Tommy O'Tractor arrived in the Foundation Phase garden with a note and a story, The Scarecrow's Wedding by Julia Donaldson.

Children heard the story, and then worked to develop a plan with nursery and reception teachers Bev McNamara and Vikki Hughes, and the youngsters decided to learn about farms and weddings.

Not many of the children had heard about weddings, so they decided to find out more.

They were also keen to help Tommy to find somebody to marry. Pupils made a bride for Tommy.

The children used the internet to research weddings, and asked members of staff about their weddings.

They then wrote lists of the things they might need for a wedding, they created invitations and chose images associated with weddings to decorate a card for the happy couple.

On the big day, the children decorated the outdoor area and Father Steve, from St Ethelwold's Church in Shotton, arrived to conduct the wedding.

All the children enjoyed taking part in the ceremony and learning about Christian weddings.

Experiential learning is so important and it's something that the children have missed out on due to the pandemic It was wonderful to be able to provide this opportunity and to see the joy in their faces as their scarecrow's married.

The school also received a very welcome donation, after housebuilder Redrow gifted planters, a birdhouse and a bug house.

They came before half term to install them and created a sensory garden for the children to enjoy.
