We recently marked Carers Rights Day, an important annual event that recognises the tremendous contribution made by unpaid carers to our society, as well as raise awareness of the challenges they face.
Unpaid carers provide invaluable support to family members and friends in need but it is often a role they fall into, meaning they possibly don’t see themselves as carers. It means carers can be unaware of their legal rights or what they are entitled to in terms of support and benefits.
I am proud that since 2022, the Welsh Government has allocated £42m to support unpaid carers. One aspect this support is the Short Breaks Scheme. Open to carers of all ages, the £9m investment offers carers the chance to take a break from their responsibilities and recharge by doing something they enjoy, which in turn supports their own mental health and wellbeing. The scheme is on course to deliver 30,000 short break opportunities in the three years up to March 2025.
Unpaid carers are often under financial pressures, which is why it’s important they claim their financial entitlements. In addition to qualifying for certain benefits, the Welsh Government has committed up to £4.5m to the Carers Support Fund, which helps carers on low incomes buy basic essential items and access information and advice.
Recent research has found one in six of the population in Wales could be an unpaid carer. They come from all walks of life, often spending hours of their time caring for their loved ones, and it is vital they’re aware of the support that is available to them.
December is upon us and if anyone is looking for a festive fix this weekend, look no further than the Erlas Victorian Walled Garden’s Christmas Fayre.
Taking place on Saturday (7th December), this festive celebration will be brimming with seasonal stalls, activities and crafts and delicious refreshments. Father Christmas will be making an appearance too!
I’m so proud to be patron of Erlas. The garden remains a place of work, comfort and inspiration for adults of all abilities and the staff and volunteers continue to do an amazing job.
Located on Bryn Estyn Lane, the Erlas Christmas Fayre is on from 9:30am – 3pm and all are welcome to attend.
