A community has pulled together after horrendous weather conditions brought by Storm Bert left the local landscape scarred by landslides.

Llanarmon near Glyn Ceiriog was left in shock after torrential rain and melting snow on Saturday (November 23) caused a series of landslips either side of the village.

The picturesque village in the Ceiriog Valley was the centre of extreme conditions that have still left a mark two days later despite the tireless efforts of the local community.

The rain from Storm Bert combined with rapidly melting thick snow that had been left by last week’s cold snap to create a perfect storm that caused one of the worst floods in recent memory on the River Ceiriog and all in the matter of a few hours.

One resident said: “It was the worst flood I have seen since I moved here over five years ago.

“The water is usually quite a distance away but it was halfway up the field nearest to us from the river.”

However, the most destructive element of the weather was how it rushed off the nearby hills in the Ceiriog Valley.

This shifted nearby land causing landslips of various sizes on the roads that are still causing issues for traffic two days later, with cars travelling over them being bounced around as they try to tackle over the rocks and thickly caked mud covering the roads.

The village itself, which lies on a crossroads, was left largely unscathed however the roads heading out to the northeast and southwest suffered multiple slips that are still with covering the road at various points.

The worst landslide led to one family being rescued and evacuated but has left a huge scar of mud across the landscape despite the phenomenal efforts of locals.

Another resident said that since the incident there had been a constant stream of farmers coming to help to clear the roads and help the family who were rescued.

“I was away that day,” they said.

While the weather has cleared since Saturday there is still a large amount of fast flowing water coming off the hills overwhelming the local drainage systems.

As of this morning this meant there was still fast flowing if shallow water flowing down the roads between Llanarmon, Glyn Ceiriog and Selattyn as drainage system, causing hazards for motorists.
