A PUBLIC CONSULTATION will be launched in Wrexham next month (December) as the county prepares to revert some roads back to 30mph.

Welsh Government introduced a default 20mph speed limit on restricted roads across Wales in September 2023.

The policy was implemented in Wrexham, with a small number of 30mph roads being determined as exempt.

However, in April this year Welsh Government announced a review of the 20mph scheme and encouraged people to contact their local council with feedback and suggestions on which roads should potentially revert back to 30mph.

Wrexham Council received 440 emails, including; 207 general comments against the 20mph scheme.

They also had 152 emails suggesting individual locations that should revert back to 30mph, as well as 54 suggesting numerous locations that should be reviewed. 

Meanwhile, 27 responses supported the 20mph limit and said no roads should revert back to 30mph.

Any changes back to 30mph will have to be processed through a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO), the council says.

(Image: Staff) They have assessed the roads suggested for review to see which are eligible, and will now launch a public consultation as part of the formal TRO process.

The consultation is set to begin on Friday, December 13.

Councillor David A Bithell, Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Housing and Climate Change said: “We are now in a position to firm-up proposals for reverting some roads back to 30mph following initial consultation and feedback."

Cllr Bithell added: “We now have to carry out statutory consultation to change the legal orders. All costs associated with the proposed changes are fully funded from Welsh Government.

“A final decision will be taken at the Executive Board on February 12 (2025).”

The roads that will be consulted on (for potentially reverting to 30mph) are;
