PLANS have been submitted to redevelop a former Co-op site in Wrexham.

An application has been lodged with Wrexham Council to demolish the old Co-op on Shones Lane in Llay.

It would make way for four supported living apartments.

The application states: "Demolition of existing derelict shop and redevelopment of four number supported living apartments for individuals with mental health and learning disability in Llay, Wrexham."

The Co-op suffered a devastating fire in 2016 and never reopened its doors - remaining derelict ever since.

There were hopes that the chain would return to the village - with plans for it to build a new store on the site of the Llay Royal British Legion on Llay New Road.  However, the Co-op withdrew the plans last year.

Councillor Bryan Apsley said at the time: "The decision by the Co-Op not to build on the Llay Legion site is a massive blow to residents who live on the Llay Green Estate and to those like myself, who live at the bottom end of Llay, by Pentre Street/Bryn Place.

"Llay is a massive village, yet we only have two shops on Market Square that are very close to one another and a new Aldi, that although has been successful is located right at the top of the village.”

The application will be decided on by Wrexham Council at a later date.
