WREXHAM'S newest foodie-pub is an added gem for the area.
I was invited along to the Savvy Fox's launch night at its Hotel Wrexham site on Wrexham Road, near Holt.
The gastropub has undergone a £350,000 transformation under new owners Steven Hesketh and Dan Gillon. Mr Hesketh said there are some "real stand out" dishes on the menu - and he wasn't lying.
We were able to sample five courses from the menu.
The first of two starters we tried was a portion of Menai mussels with a layer of cream on top. Sea food isn't usually my go to - but they were absolutely gorgeous. The brininess of the sea came through with a subtle sweetness.
Next was the black pudding in sausage scotch egg. It was made with award-winning sausage meat, and, unsurprisingly, they were delicious. The crispy breadcrumb crust gave way to the smooth egg, which was encased in the slightly grainy yet moist black pudding. The black pudding itself had a wonderful chewiness that holds up well in the scotch egg form.
We were able to sample two dishes from the list of main courses. The first was fish and chips. It's fresh haddock in Wrexham Lager beer batter, chunky chips and mushy peas. Ask any Brit what they'd like for tea and this would be a common answer. The fish had a slightly airy texture, and wasn't too greasy. A well-seasoned batter enhanced the flavour of the fish without overpowering it.
We then had a lamb skank shepherd's pie which was rich and satisfying, thanks to the savoury, well-seasoned meat and vegetable filling. The dish will appeal to those who appreciate deep, meaty flavours and a bit of rustic charm in their meals.
And then came the desert. Truth be told I was feeling very full by this point, but there's always room for desert. We had the Eton Mess - offering a delightful mix of textures and a satisfying sweetness. It’s perfect for those who enjoy easy, no-fuss desserts that still deliver on taste.
Five courses and I couldn't knock any of them.
We will definitely be coming back, it opened to the public last weekend and I couldn't recommend this place highly enough.
A great addition to the area.
