A NEW 'egg-free' cake shop has launched in Wrexham and has already proven popular with customers - so we decided to put it to the test.

As someone who would choose the savoury option most days, I have to be really craving something sweet to really appreciate it. But, when I heard about the latest business opening up in Wrexham, it caught my eye.

Situated along Crescent Road, Cake Box Wrexham is managed bu Sivajenani (Jena) Aravinthan and had its grand-opening on October 26. But the business didn't start there...

Cake Box launched in 2008 with just one store in east London. Founder Sukh Chamdal wanted to assure allergies would not alter the taste and quality of the bakes and, 16-years-later,  there are over 230 locations with "many more" branches to come.

I grew up being very aware of allergies when eating out in restaurants or grabbing a quick bite to eat due to my mum's egg and nut allergy and my sister more recently being diagnosed as coeliac (gluten-free).

So when I discovered that an egg-free cake business was opening, I jumped at the chance to tell them! And the best part - it claims to have no obvious taste difference. Intrigued, I put Cake Box to the test.

I popped in on a Saturday morning and was immediately impressed with the exterior's colourful design brightening a dark and gloomy day.

I got there at 11am (opening time) to find three customers had already beaten me to the queue.

Being a huge fan of the Great British Bake Off, I knew Paul Hollywood would have been amazed. Before me was a huge display of beautifully decorated sponges with every flavour imaginable.

Now, the slices are HUGE. Definitely enough to share between two people if you just wanted to taste something sweet, but it's so easy to get carried away.

Some of the flavours included cookies and cream, black forest, mango, hazelnut, chocolate orange, biscoff, kinder bueno and white chocolate, with choices of Victoria or chocolate sponges.

I chose the 'Creamy Creation' - a white chocolate kinder bueno inspired slice, and a 'Cookies and Cream.' The perfect treat to share with a cup of tea in the evening.

Now cakes can be overwhelmingly sweet, but that certainly wasn't the case with this. As predicted, one slice was to be shared, but that was just my preference!

The sponge was surprisingly light and fluffy for a chocolate base. In fact, I don't think I've ever tried a cake that was so light in texture. Each mouthful had the perfect ratio of sponge to cream, not to mention the decoration looking too pretty and delicate to demolish.

What also impressed me was the variety of full sized cakes, including cheesecakes, that were on offer. And I couldn't get over how reasonably priced everything was.

For one slice of cake, the starting price for most options is £3.99 - a bargain for the portion size you get. For a full sized cake on display, prices started at approximately £30. I will definitely be going back for someone's birthday, what a yummy treat!

Cake Box also offers pre-orders for special occasions and custom made options with all details on the Cake Box Wrexham Facebook page.

Going there once to find out what the fuss is about was a dangerous move. I fear I might have to go back sometime soon, and encourage all sweet tooth fans to do the same.
