Bonfire Night (or Guy Fawkes Night) is fast approaching, which I know is a day that many people look forward to.
The history of this night began in 1605 when Guy Fawkes was arrested under the Houses of Parliament and the Gunpowder Plot was exposed, so it is a date that has lived long in British history!
These days, it’s a chance to see fantastic firework displays and also a chance for people to come together at events across our area. At many events, money is raised for charities and local organisations.
As just a few examples in Wrexham, Flintshire and the wider area, you can see fireworks at Flint Castle with the RNLI, go to Penyllan Farm with a bonfire and fairground rides or attend the fireworks display hosted by Penycae Scout Hut. There are many more events, too, but I only have a limited number of words in this column!
While it’s an exciting time for many, it’s important to remember that safety is hugely important.
North Wales emergency services have issued an appeal for people to attend organised displays, and for people setting off fireworks or setting up a bonfire to follow their guidance in order to make sure people are safe.
You can find more details on the Fire Service website, and I’d encourage everyone to follow the Firework Code. For example, the guidance includes instructions to finish your firework display before 11pm and only buy fireworks that carry the CE mark.
It’s not only humans that have to be considered during this time, but animals too.
We all know that fireworks season can be a difficult time for pets, and there are great tips from groups like RSPCA and the Dogs Trust on how to keep your pets calm during this period.
As one example, the Dogs Trust advise that windows and curtains should be closed, with the lights turned on.
They also say that putting the television on or playing music can mask the firework sounds which can help your pets.
This is a time for fun and enjoyment, but also a time for us to be responsible and look out for one another, putting safety first at every step.
That way, we can all enjoy Bonfire Night!
