AN 'OVERWHELMING' effort from residents of a Flintshire street is supporting those in need.

Jan Morgan and her husband Rod are volunteers for the Flintshire Foodbank team.

When they recently heard about people who were being put up in hotels to temporarily live in in the local area, with nothing more than a kettle in their rooms to their possession, they were left 'appalled'.

As such, they set out on a selfless campaign to raise awareness of those less fortunate than themselves and also collect items which could help those people.

Jan and Rod posted notes through the letterboxes of other residents living in their cul-de-sac - at Canol Y Bryn in Bryn-y-Baal near Mold - appealing for their support.

And, many of their neighbours have since generously donated to the cause.

All in all, the appeal has seen over 45 kilograms of food donated, including cereal and tinned food.

Toiletries have also been handed over to the cause in order to help make the lives of those currently living in hotels a little more comfortable.

"Basically it is for people who have been allocated emergency accommodation in local hotels, but all they have is a kettle in the room - no other essentials.

"They rely on the foodbanks to offer them essentially meals that they can provide for themselves using just a kettle.

"When I heard this, I was appalled. I had been told that some of them have been put up in hotels along the A55, meaning there is no shop anywhere in sight."

Jan added: "That's when we decided to take action and we posted letters through people's letterboxes on our cul-de-sac, hoping we could get some donations.

"We're overwhelmed by how generous people here have been. We have managed to collect over 45kg of food in total, as well as toiletries, which is amazing."

The items donated to Jan and Rod's cause will be handed out in due course.
