A BRIDGE in Wrexham will likely need rebuilding after being damaged during Wednesday's flooding.
Wrexham Council has said there has been the "complete loss" of bridge parapet on Pentre Fron Road in the Coedpoeth area due to the high water levels. The road has been closed.
The council said it dealt with 60 weather-related issues throughout Wednesday, with two people in the Rhos area having to be temporarily re-homed due to their properties flooding.
Wrexham Council's lead member for environment, Cllr Terry Evans, said: “Firstly I would like to send thanks to our teams who worked tirelessly to minimise the impact of and risks associated with recent heavy rain downpours.
“In terms of our Bad Weather Response yesterday, our officers worked throughout the day and through the night with the shift leaving for home at 8am this morning.
“We dealt with around 60 weather related issues. These included, most significantly the complete loss of a bridge parapet in Pentre Fron, to repeated incidents of river breaching banks, culverts and trash screens requiring cleaning and leaf clearing from drainage systems.
“Close to a dozen roads were closed for parts of yesterday with only the A534 near Bellis’ Garden Centre closed overnight, this road was reopened early this morning."
He added: “River levels on the Alyn and Gwenfro were extremely high yesterday. “The bridge loss at Pentre Fron is likely to require a complete re-build and will likely be closed for some time.
“Our response was well received by the Emergency Services and we were in regular contact with both the Fire Service and North Wales Police control.
“The response was not raised as a multi-agency emergency and third parties such as Water Companies were not directly involved although a number of issues we visited yesterday did involve waste water which our teams cannot be involved with directly and we are passing through concerns to relevant parties.”
Cllr David Bithell, lead member for housing, said: “I would like to echo Cllr Evans’ thanks to our hard working teams who were extremely busy yesterday.
“The Responsive Repairs section attended two properties in the Rhos area, where due to adverse weather, flood water entered the property and both Contract Holders were rehoused in temporary accommodation. A Building Surveyor (within 24hrs) will now inspect both properties to assess the full extent of the damage.
“We had a total of 8 properties where the water levels were rising and additional flood defences had been requested. These properties have now been added to an at risk spreadsheet and will be shared with the Environment Department. We are currently re-stocking some of our flood defences units."
He added: “The out of hours service received a total of six calls where flood defences have been issued to the Contract Holders. These properties remain protected.
“From the corporate and commercial stock we had several roof leaks but nothing substantial, no reports of any major flooding.
“Roofers will be attending to these over the next couple of days. We received calls from schools with regards to flooded school yards but this was due to the sheer volume of rain we had yesterday.”
