Those who know about this cafe tucked away on Deeside Industrial Estate will attest to it being one of the best places to get a cooked breakfast in Flintshire.
I had to try it for myself, but when I went to Champs Cafe I at first though it was closed.
But once I ventured through the door in the brink building, I found one of the most distinctive cafe interiors I've encountered.
The decor is a celebration of the pugilistic art of boxing.
The walls are massive black and white images of the sport that, when viewed alongside the chrome furniture and boxing ring ropes, give the impression that you have stumbled into a gym.
But the aromas from the large, open kitchen soon confirm that freshly cooked food is on the card.
I was there for a cooked breakfast, rumour having it that the best in Flintshire could be served here.
The menu is idiosyncratic - with the breakfasts following the boxing theme.
The Bruno Breakfast is the traditional Full English, while those wanting a lighter version can order the Naseem.
Vegans can opt for the Lewis Breakfast, while those wanting breakfasts with additions from the home nations can go for the Calzaghe, Buchanan, or Gypsy King.
Although I was tempted by the white pudding included in the Irish-themed Gypsy King Breakfast, I opted for the Buchanan that comes with several Scottish components.
Alongside the usual sausage, bacon, black pudding, mushrooms and egg, the dish delivers a knockout blow with the addition of lorne sausage and a haggis patty.
My first impression of the breakfast is that it was massive. If we were judging on quantity alone it would be the undisputed heavyweight champion of North Wales. But could it deliver on quality?
The simple answer is yes. And then some.
ROOM FOR MORE:
- Authentic taste of something different at Buckley takeaway
- Sandwich shop is a great addition to Shotton High Street
- Fresh and tasty breakfast awaits to the rear of farm shop
Every item was as good as could be hoped for - while some are just a cut above.
The hashbrowns are homemade, substantial fluffy potato clouds in a delicate crisp shell. Perfection!
The fried slice was deliciously crisp, and even the usually humble mushrooms packed a flavoursome punch.
With the lorne sausage and haggis, and a delicate spicing of the fried eggs, there were additional flavours and textures that elevated this breakfast to a title contender.
On another visit with a friend, he had the Lewis Vegan Breakfast while I went for the waffles.
My friend, who added a poached egg to make it a vegetarian breakfast, said the meal was one of the best veggie options he had tried.
The tofu scramble and veggie sausages were particularly excellent, and he was impressed with the quality of the mushrooms. The poached egg was cooked to perfection.
However, he did say that with meat replacements for the sausages, bacon and black pudding, it was perhaps one similar item too many, adding that he wouldn't have missed the "facon".
The waffles, served with served with caramelised banana and mascarpone was deliciously rich and moreish. As much a dessert as a breakfast, the blend of flavours and textures delivered an exquisite mouthfeel.
The other breakfasts demand a return so that I can try the Welsh breakfast that comes with laverbread cake, as well as the Irish option that boasts potato cake, soda bread, and white pudding.
There are more tempting options on the menu at Champs, including pancake stacks, French toast, shakshuka and "mushroom mania".
I'll be returning for a second and possibly third round soon!
Champs is located at Unit 64, Drome Road, on the Deeside Industrial Estate CH5 2LR.
