HEAVY flooding caused chaos on the roads in Flintshire and Wrexham on Wednesday (October 16).

Torrential rainfall throughout the day left numerous roads in the two counties submerged in deep floodwater.

Among the roads police have urged people to avoid are A541 from Caergwrle towards Mold, A541 Wylfa roundabout towards Wrexham, A5118 from Pontblyddyn to Padeswood by the Cement Factory, A525 south of Cross Lanes at the bottom of the hill, A5104 Main Road, Broughton and A525 Coedpoeth to Wrexham.

A Met Office Yellow warning for rain remains in place until 9pm on Wednesday - with people living badly affected areas facing an anxious wait to see if their property floods. A small number of people living in Lower Kinnerton, near the Flintshire-Cheshire border, had to be evacuated due to flooding, Cheshire Police said.

At 4pm on Wednesday, the water level of the River Dee at Bangor-on-Dee was in excess of 13 metres.

There has also been disruption on the rail network - with flooding blocking the line between Shotton and Wrexham General, and a fallen tree blocking the line between Ruabon and Chirk.

A Wrexham Council spokesperson said: "Should there be any disruption to schools or school transport that will be communicated directly to parents and guardians by schools involved.

"The wet weather is causing some difficult travelling conditions on our roads. River levels remain high and ground is sodden, which is restricting all outfalls for our drainage systems.

"We have teams out and about dealing with pressure areas and have unfortunately had to close some roads, and would urge drivers to take note of any temporary road signage advising them of closures. This will continue until water levels recede.

"As we know the UK has seen a huge amount of wet weather and we would urge caution when travelling anywhere, but particularly where there is standing water."

They added: "Hopefully we’ll see a few drier days soon, which will help improve things and allow us to do some clear-up work. But in the meantime please bear with us as we strive to keep everyone moving."
