A WREXHAM primary school has started the new term on the back of a positive inspection.

Estyn inspectors visited Barker's Lane CP School earlier this year, ahead of the summer holidays.

The school, which has 243 children on roll, was noted for its pupils, staff and parents' pride of being a part of the school community.

The report added: "By working together, everyone contributes to the caring ethos of the school. Under the effective leadership and direction of the experienced headteacher, all staff contribute to an environment where pupils are nurtured and encouraged.

"Relationships based on respect between staff, pupils and their parents are a key strength of the school."

During the June inspection, it was recognised that "most pupils make good progress in developing their literacy, numeracy and digital skills. As pupils progress through the school, they speak and write with confidence, developing a rich and sophisticated vocabulary". However, inspectors noted that "pupils do not make enough progress in developing their Welsh language skills over their time at the school".

This resulted in one of only two recommendations in the report - improve pupils' Welsh skills, with the second being to develop a whole-school approach to the planning for progression of the curriculum, which builds developmentally on pupils' previous learning and experiences.

In regards to staff, inspectors stated: "Teachers monitor pupils' learning well, using worthwhile strategies to assess progress both during and over the course of a series of lessons. They provide constructive feedback to pupils. As a result, most pupils know what they do well and how to improve their work."

Leadership at the school was highlighted, with the report reading: "The headteacher provides strong and compassionate leadership. She has worked in collaboration with pupils, staff, governors and parents to establish a clear vision for the school and create an inclusive culture where pupils feel safe and valued."

The report went on to say: "The headteacher and deputy headteacher provide strong strategic leadership, creating an environment where staff feel valued and respected. Senior leaders have created a positive working culture where all staff work together well as part of a team."

Headteacher Chris Edwards said: "We are delighted with the inspection report, which reflects the caring, nurturing community at our school, the high expectations we have of ourselves and the high aspirations for our pupils.

"I am proud of all of the children, the staff and how well we work together with our families, governors and other agencies to ensure we do the best we can educationally for everyone in our care.

"We are already working on Cymraeg and extending our planning for progression to areas other than the strong provision for literacy, numeracy and digital skills, and will continue to do so.

"I would like to thank everyone involved with our school - pupils, staff, parents and governors for their wonderful support".
