AN INQUEST has been held into the death of a pedestrian following a collision along the A483.

James Robert Ellison, of Ddol, Bersham, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident on the A483 northbound shortly after midnight on October 22, 2023.

An inquest was opening was held in October 2023 and adjourned pending completion of a police forensic collision investigation. A full inquest was held County Hall in Ruthin today (October 9).

The collision involving Mr Ellison, 45, and a single vehicle occurred between Junction 4 Mold Road and Junction 5 Ruthin Road. Emergency services were called at 12.03 but, sadly, Mr Ellison was pronounced dead at 12.27am.

Mr Ellison had been drinking at the Maesgwyn Hall on Mold Road with company beforehand and had been intoxicated at the time of the incident.

The North East Wales Investigation Forensic Unit concluded that it is likely Mr Ellison appeared from the central reservation area before walking into the road and would have clearly been able to see the car approaching, traveling northbound in the direction of Chester.

A pathologist's cause of death following a post-mortem examination was multiple injuries due to road traffic collision.

Despite the stretch of road being dark at the time of the incident, the driver had not been intoxicated, was driving within the legal speed limit of between 60-70mph and had passed all necessary health checks. There is no evidence to suggest this was a deliberate act.

John Gittins, senior coroner for North Wales East and Central, concluded that the death of Mr Ellison was the result of a road traffic collision, and stated that the driver had insufficient time and distance to prevent a collision from happening in that moment.
