NATURAL Resources Wales has begun improvement works on drains in an area of Flintshire blighted by flooding.

The organisation is conducting works on the Sandycroft drain and Pentre drain north, between Glendale Avenue and Phoenix Street in Sandycroft.

The Sandycroft and Pentre areas have been beset by flooding issues in recent years - with properties left submerged on multiple occasions.

(Image: UGC) It led to residents holding an emotive public meeting with representatives from Flintshire Council and local policiticans.

Calls for action about flooding in Sandycroft came in 2021, and that same year a joint authority action plan on dealing with flooding issues was produced

The work Natural Resources Wales will conduct involves:

  • Removal of debris, silt and sediment deposits, and any other obstructions to flow within the watercourse to improve flows and help manage flood risk.
  • Vegetation and tree management works to facilitate access to undertake the above operations.
  • Undertake survey (CCTV or otherwise) of Pentre drain culvert to determine its structural condition.

The work has started and will run into 2025, the Leader has been informed.

Queensferry Community Council is also on the look out for flood wardens. This voluntary role involves working with Flintshire Council and NRW to ensure their community is prepared for flooding.

The role involves:

  • Ensuring members of the community have received direct flood warnings, understand what they mean and where to get further information.
  • Helping to identify vulnerable people within the community who may need extra help.
  • Reporting blocked drains, ditches, etc to the relevant authority.

Anyone wishing to become a flood warden in their area should contact dee@queensferrycommunitycouncil.gov.uk or clerk@queensferrycommunitycouncil.gov.uk
