A TEAM of volunteers came to the rescue of a person who had become trapped down an abandoned mine in Wrexham.

The incident took place at Minera on Saturday (September 28), according to the North Wales Cave Rescue Organisation who stepped into save the person.

When the team arrived, they found that the person was at the bottom of a shaft.

They had also suffered an ankle injury as a result of the incident.

The person was brought back to the surface via a hauling system by the volunteers.

A statement from the North Wales Cave Rescue Organisation read: "We were called by North Wales Police with a report that a person was stuck in an abandoned mine at Minera near Wrexham.

"When the rescue team arrived they found that the casualty was at the bottom of a 10m shaft to the surface but was unable to ascend because of an ankle injury they had sustained further underground.

"A team member descended to assess the casualty and then a hauling system was set up and the casualty brought to the surface without further incident."

North Wales Cave Rescue Organisation provides an underground search and rescue service across North Wales.

All team members are volunteers and they depend on financial donations to keep them in operation.
