SPECIAL SHIRTS worn by Wrexham AFC stars to commemorate the Gresford mining disaster will be auctioned off next month.

The black shirts were worn for one-time only during the Reds' 2-1 win over Crawley Town on Saturday, September 21.

A day later, the city came together to remember those who lost their lives in the disaster which struck 90 years ago and claimed the lives of 266 people.

More than 500 men were working within the mine on the night of September 22, with many doubling on shifts to watch Wrexham play Tranmere Rovers at the Racecourse Ground later that afternoon.

The club has maintained a close connection with the mining community ever since that fateful day.

And, the anniversary shirts worn in that Wrexham win were donated to the Miners Rescue Station Project.

TOP STORIES TODAY

Ahead of the 90th anniversary of the disaster, Wrexham swapped their usual red home shirt for special editions of the black away kit – each featuring a special patch to commemorate the anniversary.

The patch featured a mining lamp, with a stylised 90 – featuring a pit wheel – and the year of the disaster, 1934.

Arranged by New York-based Wrexham fan Jay Julg and designed by Liam Stokes-Massey, the logo was gifted to the Wrexham Miners Project and also features on a range of commemorative clothing and a pin badge.

All can be bought from the Wrexham Miners Project, on Maesgwyn Road, with money raised going to their Education Fund.

From midday on Thursday, October 10, the one-off black memorial Wrexham shirts - and many other items - will be auctioned off to help raise money for the project.

The Miners Rescue Station was purpose built, as required by the Coal Mines Act 1911, and was officially opened in November 1913 as a training centre for mine rescue teams.

The Wrexham Miners Project is now working to preserve the building in memory of the brave people who trained here and to provide a cultural hub for the local community.

Among other signed items listed for the day are other Wrexham shirts, a match ball and even a banner signed by Wrexham AFC co-chairman Rob McElhenney.

All proceeds will go towards helping the Wrexham Miners Rescue team continue their good work to preserve a vital piece of the city's history.
