Gwenfro Valley Adventure Playground is a valuable, much-loved resource that offers crucial support to the community.

I recently visited the facility to see firsthand the impressive progress being made on rebuilding play structures, as well as the newly installed toilet facilities that have been partially funded by the Welsh Government.

More than 400 children visit Gwenfro Valley Adventure Playground every year and the latest improvements aim to further enhance its offerings for children and families.

My visit took place towards the end of the summer holidays which can be a problematic time for children who regularly receive free school meals during term time, but then face a six-week period where the food is unavailable. Thankfully, Gwenfro Valley was helping address the issues by taking part in the Welsh Government’s Holiday Hunger Programme.

It was great to visit the Adventure Playground and to meet the hardworking staff and trustees. After speaking with some of the families that regularly use the facilities, it is clear the new improvements will make a positive difference.

As we approach the colder months, we can all take steps to protect ourselves and each other from common winter illnesses, which, in turn, will help NHS staff focus on people who need the most care.

Vaccination is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other common respiratory viruses, which traditionally increase during the colder months, alongside the occasional peaks of COVID-19 cases throughout the year.

Flu vaccinations for children are already underway in schools and the adult flu and COVID-19 vaccination programme will begin on 1 October 2024.

For the first time, pregnant women are being offered the RSV vaccine to help protect newborn babies from this virus, which can lead to serious complications, especially in winter. The RSV vaccine is also being offered to people as they turn 75 years old as part of a year-round programme which launched earlier this month in Wales.

Pharmacies also provide expert advice and treatment for a wide range of common conditions from coughs and colds to stomach issues.

If you’re eligible for a flu jab, for a COVID-19 booster or the new RSV vaccine, please take up the offer.
