NORMALLY when I'm in the mood to order a takeaway with friends, we end up going for the cosy triumvirate of Chinese, Indian or pizza.
But recently I've had a yearning for something a bit different, which I have found satisfied by Mai Thai in Buckley.
So, when a friend arrived at mine and the fridge was bare, I recommended we order from Mai Thai.
There are less options than at a traditional Chinese or Indian takeaway, but the options they do have are customisable.
Noodle dishes come with a choice of sauces, including teriyaki, katsu, pad thai, pad ka pow, pad kee mao, pad see ew, sweet and sour, sriracha, and sweet chilli.
Then there is the choice of noodles: egg noodles, flat rice, thin rice, or udon. Or you can choose to have the dish made with jasmine rice.
There are also options for dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten free, or nut allergy.
With several meat options, there are countless combinations of each dish.
I went for a regular-size pad see ew egg noodles. I chose the new option of pork belly, which costs an additional £2.99 (as do king prawns).

My friend went for the vegetarian pad see ew thin rice noodles, which came with extra vegetables added.
With lots of spicy and salt and pepper starters to choose from, we added salt and pepper chips to share.
We also had vegetable spring rolls and vegan Thai crackers.
Overall, we agreed that the noodles were among the best we'd tasted.
Although the white car boxes the food arrived in look small, there is a lot packed in there and we could the servings to be ample.

I thought that the pork belly added an extra layer of taste and texture compared to the regular options I had previously.
With the two sides and the crackers, there was plenty of food and it was all of a good quality.
With delivery, the meal came to £40.
I think if we had gone for one of the traditional three takeaways mentioned above, we would have paid a little less.
But for those wanting something different, Mai Thai is well worth trying.
Since that night, I have ordered from Mai Tai again, having been tempted by the promise of authentic dishes on the menu.

I went for crispy laab chicken bites along with pork belly and spring greens.
Both were very enjoyable, the chicken dish in particular having a zesty, fresh flavour that certainly tickled the taste buds.
I found the spice in these dishes at the top end of what I enjoy, a sign of their authenticity I'm sure, but there are less potent dishes available.
With desserts, bubble tea, Thai curries and soups, and more on the menu, it is likely that I will place another order in the future.
All in all, Mai Thai, is a great addition to the range of takeaway options available in Flintshire.
