CALLS have been made by concerned residents to introduce a zebra crossing on a "race track" in Wrexham.

Residents at Maes Y Dderwen on Grosvenor Road are pleading with Wrexham Council to install a crossing on the busy road in the city centre amid concerns for safety.

The independent living building is situated on the corner where Regent Street and Grosvenor Road meet.

There are traffic lights at the end of the road, but there is a constant flow of traffic from both directions, making it difficult for residents, many of whom are elderly, to cross.

After incidents with residents falling and worries over the speeds of cars on the road - with resident Fred Foulkes stating several motorists drive over 40mph on the 20mph - calls have been made for action.

Fred said: "It's like a race track, I don't know how people cross the road. It's really, really difficult.

"The curbs aren't great and there's been incidents where people have fallen over them. We're wanting to get a zebra crossing put in, but no one is interested.

"Some people don't go out as a result, as they physically can't cross the road. There's a couple that haven't been out in about two years because they're worried about the road.

"People are driving up the road like idiots in excess of 40mph in both directions, it's ridiculous.

"There are people on their own who are struggling whether it be with a walking frame and like I said, people have fallen over there.

"People need to know were here as at the minute I don't think they do and they're coming flying round the corner. We need a crossing in place."

Cllr Terry Evans said: “If a resident would like to make a concern or request that we look at installing a crossing near their residence they can contact us by going to  traffic@wrexham.gov.uk and we would explore the matter.

“Speeding is a police enforcement matter so those concerns should be addressed to police."
