THIS October, William Aston Hall welcomes the enchanting melodies and timeless tales of Celtic Connections (1 Oct).
From the rugged cliffs of Snowdonia to the rolling hills of the Brecon Beacons, each note evokes the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant stories of Wales, exploring themes of national identity, Motherhood and folklore.
Embark on a musical journey through the heart of Wales with prominent Welsh performers, Huw Watkins and Ruby Hughes.
As a pianist, Huw Watkins has appeared as a soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia and the London Sinfonietta, and performs throughout Europe and North America as a soloist and chamber musician.
Ruby Hughes is a former BBC New Generation Artist, winner of both First Prize and Audience Prize at London's 2009 Handel Singing Competition.
Ruby also holds a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and was shortlisted for a 2014 Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award. Through her blossoming catalogue of recordings and lovingly curated performances, she has become known for her interpretations of the music of the Baroque and 20th and 21st Centuries.
The programme will also include the world-premiere performance of two song cycles by local composer, Cameron Biles-Liddell. Cameron’s music regularly draws inspiration from natural landscapes, aspects of momentum, his Welsh heritage and folklore.
From orchestral collaborations with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to intimate chamber projects with Fenella Humphreys, Riot Ensemble and Mahan Esfahani, Cameron has enjoyed collaborating with a vibrant range of professional musicians across the UK.
This has led to his work being broadcast on BBC Radio 3, as well as receiving commissions and premieres at the Cheltenham, Three Choirs and Spitalfields Music Festivals.
