A PUB in Wrexham is set to introduce discounts for pensioners in a bid to support them through the winter months.

The Dog and Pickle, formerly known as the Nags Head, in Lavister reopened it's doors in June of last year.

Prior to opening, there was significant refurbishment inside the pub, as well as the quirky name change.

Since opening, owner Steve Lewis has been aiming to give back to the local community by hosting free coffee mornings and other events.

Ahead of the winter, the pub has introduced a discount for elderly people, which will give them 10% off from Monday to Friday between 12pm and 4pm.

In addition, a card will allow any elderly people to redeem a complimentary coffee during the winter months.

These offers have been brought in by Steve following the Government's decision to scrap the winter fuel payment across the country.

MPs voted 348 to 228 to axe the payment for all but the country’s poorest pensioners, rejecting a Tory bid for the controversial policy to be blocked.

It is expected to reduce the number of pensioners in receipt of the up to £300 payment by 10 million, from 11.4 million to 1.5 million, saving around £1.4 billion this year.

In Flintshire, 28,000 pensioners are losing their winter fuel payment, while in Wrexham, that number stands at 22,000.

Following the vote, Steve is hoping to do all he can for those set to struggle this winter.

He said: "We are going to start doing a card for pensioners, which will give them 10% off Monday to Friday 12 till 4.

"We are also going to offer with the same card that should pensioners want to come down and have a complimentary to your coffee during the winter fuel crisis.

"We will be more than happy to offer this to them where they can come, read a paper, relax in the warmth, and have a nice warm drink on us.

"We are more than aware that they will be struggling this winter with not getting the winter fuel payments from the Government, so we want to do everything we can to help.

"Terms and conditions will apply, but this will be just more to the length of time that we do it."
