A COMMUNITY COUNCIL has warned that dog fouling in a cemetery in a Wrexham village is 'worsening'.

In February this year, the Leader reported on the issue that had arisen at Rhosllanerchrugog cemetery.

Back then, the community council had been proposing to ban all dogs from being walked there.

A consultation with the public saw that decision called off, as long as dogs were kept on leads and any mess was cleared up.

However, several months later, the council say that the issue is not only continuing, but worsening too.

They say that staff are having to clear up foot paths and grave stones every morning at the site.

A spokesperson for Rhos Community Council said: "Unfortunately the issue with dog fouling in the cemetery continues and is worsening. Staff are having to clear up footpaths and grave stones every morning.

"It appears that individuals are allowing their dogs to roam free in the cemetery, also letting them out to come and do their business!"

The council is now warning that the site may soon be locked should the issue continue.

Dog foul bags are provided free of charge at the site, meaning that there should be 'no excuse' for residents not to clean up after their pets.

Staff will be monitoring the cemetery over the next few weeks and any free roaming dogs will be reported.

The council spokesperson added: "The Cemetery Road gates were previously locked when staff were not on site to prevent the cemetery being used as a thoroughfare and from dogs accessing the site.

"However, following complaints received, council made the decision to provide out of hours access to the cemetery by providing Radar keys for those who needed them, and were unable to walk around to the Stryt Las entrance.

"This is also now being abused. It appears individuals are unlocking the Cemetery Road gates as soon as staff leave, leaving the gates wide open.

"Unfortunately, due to the behaviour of the minority, it may be that a decision is made to lock the Cemetery Road side one again when staff are not on site."
