Alun School student's fundraiser for Hope House Hospice

Tom Lloyd-Hughes, 17, of Gwernymynydd near Mold is a sixth form student at the Alun School and in his spare time volunteers at the town's Hope House Tŷ Gobaith charity shop, for whom he will be raising money.

Aiming to hold the event on September 28-29, Tom has already raised more than £400 of his £800 target.

Tom Lloyd-Hughes cleaned the skatepark at The Rec in Mold .

He said: "Barring any severe weather warnings we'll be starting at 6am on the Saturday in Buckley and working our way through Mynydd Isa, Mold and Nercwys.

"My older brother, Wil is joining me for the duration and we have up to 20 volunteers who will join us at periods throughout the day to help.

"I love walking with my family and noticed that if you look closely when out and about that there is so much litter accumulating on the side of the road.

"I've always wanted to do something about it and take on a 24-hour challenge of some kind too, so a day-long litter pick in one go with no sleep seemed like a perfect way to do it.

"If we pick up all the little pieces it can soon mount up to a full bin bag, which is amazing."

Of his volunteering work at the children's hospice shop, Tom said: "I realised when I was a bit younger that a successful life is one in which I can help as many people as possible.

"I feel volunteering is the best way to do that and also help the community without taking anything away.

"I'd like to one day scale-up my volunteering and possibly help children abroad as well."

Hope House Tŷ Gobaith fundraiser, Vanessa Marubbi will be supporting Tom and said: "Tom is such an inspirational young man.

"Giving his time to help local children and families as well as improve to environment is really commendable.

Tom Lloyd-Hughes has set himself a 24-hour litter-pick.

Tom has also secured support from Aura leisure centres who have provided litter picking tools, bags and hi-vis clothing for the challenge.

He will be supported on the marathon litter-pick by his father Gareth who will follow in a car and rest along the way, as well as mother, Nia who will assist in picking litter.
