By Becky Gittins

MP for Clwyd East

On the 5 September during the debate on the Great British Energy Bill, I made my Maiden Speech in Parliament.

It was an opportunity for me to give Parliamentarians a whistle stop tour of our beautiful constituency, whilst paying tribute to the businesses and communities which work so hard to make this area of the UK so special.

As the speech took place during the Energy Bill debate I highlighted our contribution to the fast developing renewable energy economy and my drive to ensure that more good-quality sustainable jobs in the sector are brought to our region.

Earlier that day I had the opportunity to ask the Business Minister what steps he is taking to support our farmers get a better deal post Brexit. Having met with farmers in Clwyd East and in Parliament, as part of British Farming Day, I know that they feel the current trading relationship with the EU puts them at a distinct disadvantage to other counties.

The Minister made clear that the Government was determined to tackle barriers to trade, including through the negotiation of a UK-EU veterinary agreement that will help to reduce unnecessary border checks.

Over the last two weeks in Westminster I have met with a wide range of organisations and campaign groups linked to Clwyd East.

These included a meeting with representatives from Airbus regarding their activity in the UK’s space community and meeting with representatives of the WASPI campaign, who, like me, want to see action to resolve this dispute.

I also joined with other MPs regarding the mineworkers pension scheme and what needs to be done to fulfil our commitment to those impacted.

One of the best parts of my job is getting out around the constituency as much as I can.

It was a pleasure to attend Sychdyn Carnival, Cilcain Show, Llandyrnog village show, Friends of the Ffrith Fun Day, Caerwys Summer Street Party and the Dyserth Duck Race (to name a but a few) in recent weeks.

It is always a real treat to see so many vibrant community run events – well done to everyone who worked so hard to make these the success they undoubtedly were.

Finally, I have begun holding surgeries for constituents.

Please do email me if you would like a slot: becky.gittins.mp@parliament.uk. In addition, I will also be holding pensioner surgeries around the constituency to ensure that people don’t miss out on the support that’s available.
