A WREXHAM man has been fined and banned after police caught him drug-driving.

Richard Doughty, of Clos Ystrad, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The 47-year-old admitted one offence of drug-driving.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court that on May 14, police spotted the defendant apparently exceeding a 20mph speed limit in Wrexham.

He was stopped in a car park on Rhosddu Road and provided a positive reading for drugs at the roadside.

When his blood was analysed, it was discovered that he had 64 microgrammes of benzoylecgonine (a cocaine breakdown product also known as BZE) in a litre of blood - the limit being 50.

Andy Holliday, defending, made limited representation to the court - including that his client's BZE reading had been low.

He told the court Doughty was on universal credit and asked for any financial imposition to be deducted from his benefits.

Mr Holliday also asked to the court to keep any driving ban to a minimum.

District Judge Gwyn Jones told Doughty that for the "very straight-forward drug driving" matter which had landed him in the dock, he would pay a £200 fine and £85 costs, as well as an "80 victim surcharge.

The defendant was also banned form driving for 12 months.
