THREE Arriva workers have been praised for coming to the aid of a bus passenger in a medical emergency in Wrexham.

Coleen Fitzgerald was on her way to Chester last Thursday (September 5), when her friend started to feel very unwell.

Just before 1pm, Operational Supervisor Andy Walls received a phone call from driver Gary Jones, informing him that a passenger was in difficulty and having some sort of medical episode.

Andy told him to ring for an ambulance and he said he would try and sort something out.

Darren Charles (Relief Operational Supervisor) was down at King Street Bus Station monitoring buses, and was called by Andy and asked if there was a spare vehicle available.

He said there was a van and was ready to go to Marford where the bus was situated.

Shortly after Gary rang Andy back and said he’d been told that an ambulance would be two to three hours, at which point Darren drove to Marford and took the stricken passenger to the A+E Department at the Maelor and made sure they were safe and being cared for.

The trio have been praised by Arriva for their work in helping the stricken passenger.

A spokesperson for Arriva North West & Wales said: “Thankfully the person was able to get the treatment they needed and them wish her well.

“Our values at Arriva include doing the right thing and making a difference: it’s clear Gary and Darren live by those values, and this was another example of a great team effort by our colleagues.

“It’s nice to know that their help was very much appreciated, and we all appreciate what they did too.”

Gary and Darren had been praised last week by Coleen, who stated their help "restored her faith in human nature".

She added: "People these days are always complaining about different things and bus delays etc, but without these two, it could have been very different.

"Even the other passengers on the bus, they weren't moaning, they were concerned and one young girl even ran over the road to the shop to get a bottle of water for us.

"Everybody was so nice, thank goodness for their help, it was very very kind of them.

"It's restored my faith in human nature."
